A Year on the Planet of the Humans

A year ago, “Planet of the Humans”, the documentary film by Michael Moore, together with Jeff Gibbs and Ozzie Zehner, was released to much controversy. You now can watch the film for free through April and May on Youtube. And you can also watch Michael Moore’s interview with Stephen Colbert of the Late Show about the film.

Here at *Another End of the World is Possible*, the film launched a productive debate with my techno-optimist friend, Mark Green:

  1. “Damn Dirty Humans!: ‘Planet of the Humans’ and Progressive Denial”
  2. “Beyond Doom: A Response to Mark Green”
  3. Part 5 of the Halstead-Green Debate

On Earth Day this year, Gibbs and Zehner released a statement, excerpted below:

“Planet of the Humans is a warning that, after decades of environmentalism as we know it, by almost every measure the planet is in far worse shape. There comes a time where instead of just blaming the other side, we have to question our own movement. Planet of the Humans reveals that the “green” technologies being pushed by “environmental” leaders do not work as advertised, are in fact a ramping up of the very things destroying the planet, and actually represent a fifty trillion dollar “green” profit center for bankers, billionaires, and industrialists. …

“It is painful to come to grips with the reality that there is no version of eight, going on nine, going on ten billion humans; no version of this level of consumption and capitalism and economic growth; or that there is no “technology” made by industrial civilization that can save the planet from industrial civilization; but facing the full reality of the time we are in is the only true hope for life on earth, including us.”

— Jeff Gibbs & Ozzie Zehner

Gibbs and Zehner are now promoting a book and film by Derrick Jensen* and others called “Bright Green Lies.”

* I try to add this caveat anytime I quote or cite Jensen or DGR: While I concur with Deep Green Resistance’s critique of western industrial civilization, and while I am sympathetic to any attempt to dismantle gender, I do not agree with DGR’s position on transgender people. I believe they are just wrong on this issue. See EarthFirst!’s brief critique of DGR’s transphobia here.
